App Of The Day: lekiosk

Digital newsstand app arrives in the UK, following downloads to a quarter of French iPads.

lekiosk claims to be the the highest-grossing iPad app in France's App Store. It has now crossed the Channel to the UK, allowing users to browse and buy titles from a rotating-style digital 3D newsstand, with the BBC among one name that has already signed up.

There are around 100 titles available at launch, and users can subscribe to a monthly ten magazine bundle for £10.

lekiosk commissioned YouGov to support the launch with data that shows one in 20 Brits already read magazines via tablets, though the idea appeals to more than one-third.

Michael Philippe, co-founder, lekiosk, said: "The magazine industry is undergoing the same shift we saw in the music industry a few years ago – tomorrow’s magazine consumers are going to be doing their reading on tablet screens.

"Most publishers have already realised that it’s in their interest to make their content available to these upwardly mobile consumers because they’ll be able to offer them the same rich visual experience, but in a much more convenient way.

"Publishers are keen to work with us because they know that we’re committed to helping them sell more copies of their magazines and give consumers the best possible experience."

The app is available on iPhone and iPad, while an Android version is due in September.
