App of the Day: BT SmartTalk

Free app saves customers money by linking smartphone calls with home phone calling plans.

BT has today launched a new free app aimed at cutting costs for customers on their smartphones by linking calls with their home phone calling plans.

Available for iPhone and Android smartphone users, BT SmartTalk, which works on Wi-Fi and any mobile data connection, allows BT customers to make iPhone calls in the UK and abroad that are billed as though they are calling from their home phone. The app also allows BT broadband customers to access over 7.5 million hotspots across the globe for free.

Meanwhile, customers can make calls from abroad on their mobile for the same price as a UK call, as well as make inclusive calls using their home calling plan to UK landlines and on 0800 numbers on their smartphone.

BT PAYG smartphone customers could also reduce the cost of their calls to mobiles by using the app, as the company’s landline rates are cheaper than standard prepay tariffs.
John Petter, director consumer MD at BT, said: “This is a really exciting breakthrough that means you can take your BT calling plan with you and continue saving money when you’re away from home, either in the UK or abroad.

“BT SmartTalk helps you get even more value from your BT package and much more from your smartphone. At last you can actually call freephone 0800 numbers for free from mobiles and get inclusive 0845 and 0870 calls too. And of course, you can take advantage of BT Wi-Fi which gives you access to a massive network of 7.5 million hotspots around the world.”
