Angry Birds iPhone game soars to 500k downloads in a month

Developer Rovio hails publisher Chillingo as 'the App Store kingmaker'.

iPhone puzzle game Angry Birds has sold more than 500,000 downloads in less than a month, according to publisher Chillingo.

The game was developed by Finnish studio Rovio Mobile - a veteran of the mobile games scene - and released under Chillingo's Clickgamer sub-brand.

Rovio CEO Mikael Hed has hailed the partnership. "Chillingo is really the App Store kingmaker," he says.

"No other company has managed to repeatedly raise previously unknown titles to the top of the App Store charts, making them into leading game brands as they have done with Angry Birds."

The performance of Angry Birds encapsulates why so many independent developers are excited about the App Store - a couple of years ago, Rovio was struggling to get its own-IP games onto operator decks.

However, equally relevant is the fact that it partnered with a publisher for its iPhone hit. You can self-publish on the App Store, but an increasing number of developers are looking for publisher partners in this arena.
