Rovio Mobile has been busy, rolling out its Magic Places service, hitting Microsoft's app store and preparing for movie future.

Rovio Mobile has teamed up with US books retailer Barnes & Noble for the debut of its new Magic Places feature for the Angry Birds games.

More than 700 of B&N's stores are involved in the rollout, but for now it only applies to owners of the company's Nook Color e-reader device.

If they own the Nook version of Angry Birds, they will be able to unlock the Mighty Eagle power-up for free by playing the game while in one of the stores, via the in-store Wi-Fi network.

"We’ve already experienced great success with NOOK Apps and Angry Birds as our bestseller, and believe NOOK Color customers will enjoy being the first in the world to access Angry Birds ‘Magic Places'," says Barnes & Noble's president of digital products Jamie Iannone.

Magic Places will be about more than Nook, though: Rovio is working with Nokia on NFC-enabling Angry Birds on that company's devices, while location-based unlocking is also likely to make its way into the iOS, Android and Windows Phone versions of the game.

Windows Phone? Oh yes, that's just happened too: Angry Birds has finally been released for Microsoft's smartphones as part of its Must Have Games series. On WP7, the game is a $2.99 paid title, as opposed to the free ad-supported Android version and the $0.99 iPhone edition.

Finally, there is news on Rovio's big-screen ambitions for its feathery franchise, which has now topped 250 million downloads across all platforms. Rovio has appointed former Marvel exec David Maisel as a 'Special Advisor', with a role focused on expanding Angry Birds onto other entertainment formats, and executive producing future Angry Birds films.

"David was instrumental in rebooting Marvel Studios and turning it into a blockbuster-producing powerhouse," says Rovio boss Mikael Hed. "We welcome his experience and vision as we continue broadening our entertainment production scope at Rovio."

His appointment follows Rovio's acquisition of Finnish animation studio Kombo, which will be working on TV and film content for the company.
