Two thirds of that time is spent on apps according to Nielsen's latest research.

The average Android user in the US spends 56 minutes a day using the web and apps on their device, according to the latest research from Nielsen.

It claims that two thirds of that time is spent using apps, while a third is spent using the web. The company presents this as some kind of 'which do they prefer?' test, although that seems somewhat tenuous given the different uses people may have for the two.

More interesting is Nielsen's analysis of how the time spent on apps breaks down. It claims that the 10 most popular Android apps account for 43% of all time spent by Android owners in apps, while the top 50 account for 61% of all time spent.

"With 250,000+ Android apps available at the time of this writing, that means the remaining 249,950+ apps have to compete for the remaining 39 percent of the pie," notes Nielsen in its blog post.
