Android users more interested in apps than games

So says Mplayit's latest data, anyway.

App discovery firm Mplayit has released data showing the relative interest in apps versus games from iPhone, Android and BlackBerry visitors to its Facebook service.

Just 17% of Android visitors are looking for games, compared to the 83% looking for apps. By contrast, 64% of iPhone visitors are after games, and 36% after apps. BlackBerry sits between the two - 33% looking for games, and 67% looking for apps.

Why aren't more Android users looking for games? Perhaps because Android Market's game catalogue is still rather basic.

"Android is a powerful platform of compelling APIs, but Google needs to persuade both gamers and game developers to get on board," says CEO Michael Powers.

"GDC will be a critical opportunity for them to build the all-important developer momentum that will in time fan out to the ordinary consumer."

Google has a significant presence at next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Mplayit has identified other trends from its data. Location-based apps are increasingly popular, but the ones that get most media coverage - Loopt, Foursquare and Gowalla - DON'T get as much interest from Mplayit's users as apps like FastMall, AroundMe and BeatTheTraffic.

Meanwhile, Mplayit says that barcode-scanning apps are also increasingly popular.
