Android tops UK smartphone market with 47 per cent

More than double the share of second-placed BlackBerry.

New figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech for the 12 weeks ending August 7th 2011 show how fast the Android OS is growing in the UK.

Its share for the same period in 2010 was 22.9 per cent.

The OS has grown largely at the expense of Symbian, which went from 26.3 per cent to 7.2 per cent, and from iOS, down eight per cent to 20.8 per cent.

However, the fact is that overall sales are booming because of the ongoing growth in smartphones.

Over the 12 week period, 68.5 per cent of phone sales in the UK were smartphones – meaning that 41 per cent of Britons own one.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech believes there's still room for more growth, but that handset makers need to address new markets with new form factors.

Dominic Sunnebo, Kantar's global consumer insight director, said: "Smartphone design is in danger of becoming too standardised, with 90 per cent of smartphones now using a candybar shape, compared with only 54 per cent in 2009.

"With a lack of design differentiation, big name brands have to work harder to convince consumers to choose their products over another’s.

“One such way would be to target the over 45s. 17 million people aged 45 plus in Britain who still don’t own a smartphone, but these consumers want different things from their phone.  For example, late converters gravitate towards physical keyboards and slider phones.

"If manufacturers can develop smartphones that attract this audience we are likely to see the market grow even further."

Here are the OS shares for the main EU countries and US.
