Android smartphone sales up 1,000 per cent in Asia

Outsells runner-up RIM by more than 500,000 units.

Market researcher GfK's results show Southeast Asia to be smartphone hungry, which continues to push its growth as an emerging market.

The firm claims Q3 saw over 4.7 million smartphones sold in total, worth around $1.5 billion. This amounts to volume and value growth of 120 per cent and 109 per cent respectively, compared to the same time last year.

Of the total smartphones sold 1.8 million units were down to Google's Android OS, a growth of 1,000 per cent on Q3 2010.

These sales saw Android's popularity grow to become the number one mobile OS in the market in the third quarter having climbed 40 per cent in volume across Q1 and Q2, according to the report.

This leaves the second and third place in Southeast Asia to be completed by RIM OS and Symbian OS respectively, which have combined shares of almost 90 per cent.

Benedict Hong, regional account director for telecommunications, said: "GfK Asia’s retail tracking reveals consistently healthy sales performance of Android phones—the only smartphone OS which has been registering unwavering month-on-month growth over the last twelve months."

Further results show that Android's leadership equates to two in every five smartphones sold.

Hong continued, saying: "From just over 50 models of Android smartphones available in the market a year ago, the figure has swelled to almost 170 models in the last quarter."
