Nielsen data gives Google OS a 29 per cent share.
In a study of 14,701 Americans, Nielsen puts Android just ahead of BlackBerry (27 per cent) and Apple iOS (also 27 per cent).
In the device charts, Apple and RIM hold a clear lead, but HTC of Taiwan is third with 17 per cent market, while Motorola has 11 per cent and Samsung seven per cent.
Nokia has just two per cent. No surprise as the Finnish firm has never had a decent foothold Stateside. Will the MS deal make a difference? The Windows family of devices currently has a 10 per cent market share...
The breakdown of the OSs was pretty evenly spread across the various age brackets that Nielsen charted.
But youngsters do seem to like Android: six per cent of those between 18 and 24 expressed a preference for it, versus four per cent for iOS and BlackBerry.
