Android in China? Flying but chaotic

40m devices owners served by 70 indie app stores.

MobileCrunch was at the Android Fever panel at Disrupt Beijing, and heard that although the OS is growing fast in China, the market is far from smooth.

David Chao of DCM, said: “The Android market in China is going through a chaotic phase,” referring to the huge number of app stores.

“Nobody is making money on Android software in China,” he said. “But over the next two or three years it’s going to be one of the most lucrative properties.”

He sat alongside Wang Hua of Innovation Works and John Lagerling, director of Android Global Partnerships at Google, and all agreed that Android is going to dominate the lower end of the smartphone market in China.

They also believe the open source nature of Android will help its adoption by the growing number of local OEMs.

Chao added: “I believe Android is the MS DOS/windows vs. Mac in the 80s and the 90s. Android surpasses the iPhone and iOS and for the ecosystem to thrive it’s all about the numbers.”
