Android: Europe's biggest mobile OS

Grew 1,580 per cent year-on-year to 7.9m units in 4Q 2010, says IDC.

The Western European mobile phone market grew 3.2 per cent year-on-year to this quarter, with shipments of smartphones increasing to 25.6m units, 99.4 per cent higher than in 4Q09.

That growth means smartphones now represent 44 per cent of total shipments.

Conversely feature phone shipments declined by around 25 per cent to 33.1m units.

Within the smartphone space, Android grew 1,580 per cent year-on-year to 7.9m units, while Windows Phone 7 grew Microsoft's share 18 per cent year-on-year.

Android's market share leapt from four per cent to 31 per cent in less than a year to become the market leader in 4Q10.
