Gene Munster thinks it's 70% likely to put the boot into Google.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has penned a research note claiming that Apple is 70% likely to develop its own search engine in the next five years.
"We believe Apple could utilize data unavailable to Google, data generated by the company's App Store, to create a mobile centric search engine, which would be a unique offering to Google's search engine".
As you'll have guessed, Munster thinks such a move would be a way for Apple to hit Google where it hurts - in the search space.
He suggests that Apple could acquire a startup search company like Cuil, and use its technology as the basis for this new search engine.
Meanwhile, Munster also predicts that Apple will develop its own Maps offering, rather than continue relying on Google Maps.

The search engine is an interesting prediction, although saying it's 70% likely leaves plenty of wriggle room if it doesn't happen.
