Analyst predicts $18bn mobile games explosion by 2014

Pyramid Research has managed to out-Juniper Juniper for optimism.

Analyst firm Pyramid Research claims the global mobile gaming market will be worth $18 billion by 2014, rising from $6.9 billion in 2008.

The company's latest report suggests that the effect of iPhone and its App Store will stimulate growth in developed markets as rivals strive to catch up. However, it also pinpoints emerging markets as key growth drivers.

"Although most in emerging markets cannot afford sophisticated devices, they are eager to experiment and use mobile data services; this is true for both mobile communications and entertainment, of which mobile videogames are a major driving force," says author Jan ten Sythoff.

"For many users, handsets are the first device they own that enables access to electronic forms of entertainment."

The report looks set to become a staple resource for any mobile games company trying to weedle funding out of sceptical VC firms. That's a role usually played by reports from Juniper Research, but its most recent mobile games report predicted $10 billion of revenues by 2013.
