AMD launches mobile toolkit

Chip giant AMD is targeting the wireless games sector with a suite of hardware acceleration tools designed to bring console quality to mobile.

Then tools are based on the OpenVG 1.0 and OpenGL ES 2.0 industry standards as well as its own AMD’s Unified Shader Architecture, which powers the graphics in Microsoft Xbox 360 game system. They will be made available to handset manufacturers through discrete media processors as well as through IP licensing agreements with semiconductor suppliers.

Paul Dal Santo, VP and general manager of AMD’s handheld division, said: “We are driving the creation of truly compelling content for the next-generation mobile gaming devices that consumers demand…this architectural design delivers high-quality graphics, while consuming less power than either software rendering or rendering using a traditional 3D graphics core.”

AMD is not alone in its desire to reach out to mobile. Rivals such as Nvidia and ATI are already well-immersed in the market. Meanwhile ARM announced yesterday that it is shipping its hardware design tools to software developers in a bid to open up the market for games on phones and set-top boxes.
