Amazon unveils Kindle app for iPad

Other tablets are available. And it works on them too!

Amazon has given users a sneak peek at what it's calling Kindle Apps for Tablet Computers - a new iPad-friendly version of its e-reader software.

It specifies the iPad, but also says that the app will work on other tablet computers - although not which ones exactly.

"Like all Kindle apps, Kindle for tablet computers will include Whispersync technology, which automatically synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across your Kindle and Kindle compatible devices including PC, Mac, iPhone, and BlackBerry," runs the blurb.

The app will give users access to the 450,000 e-books in Amazon's Kindle store, with free samples to help users decide what to buy.

It certainly looks swish. The question is what Apple will make of the iPad version.

As the text above implies, Kindle is already available as an iPhone app. However, the difference with iPad is that Apple is launching its own e-books store for the device, iBookStore.

It's still unclear whether this means Apple will nix rival services from launching native iPad apps. However, Amazon's decision to develop its tablet app for a range of devices is recognition that there will soon be plenty more fish in the tablet sea to target.
