Amazon to acquire LOVEFiLM

Amazon to acquire LOVEFiLM

Swoops for leading Euro online movie and DVD-by-post service.

LOVEFiLM operates in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and Amazon already has a significant minority shareholding in the firm after which LOVEFiLM took over Amazon's DVD rental business.

The move would make Amazon a significant player in the streaming movie space in Europe. It is not currently active in this market.

The deal is thought to value the business at about £200m.

It'll be interesting to see what happens now mobile wise. LOVEFiLM launched an app last year, with options to tinker with the rental list and so on, but it lacked the ability to stream to the mobile device.

Amazon must surely be looking at this.

"Lovefilm has been innovating on behalf of movie rental customers across Europe for many years and with the advent of the Lovefilm player, they are further delighting customers by streaming digital movies for their immediate enjoyment," said Amazon's vice-president of European retail, Greg Greeley.
