Amazon's HTML5 Kindle iPad app bypasses Apple

Amazon's HTML5 Kindle iPad app bypasses Apple

Adds iPad section to app launched last August.

Amazon's new touch-optimised Kindle Store for iPad will allow readers to purchase or read Kindle e-books via Safari to be read via the Kindle Cloud Reader or offline app.

Of course, these HTML5 powered web apps give firms like Amazon the chance to avoid Apple's 30 per cent cut of revenue from any recurrent purchases inside an app.

Selling via the browser works around this.

The move ups the competition between Apple and Amazon, which is stealthily emerging as a worthy rival to Apple because of its converged hardware and software offerings.
