Adult apps crackdown on the App Store

Adult apps crackdown on the App Store

iBoobs will wobble no more.

Speculation surrounds Apple's rules for iPhone apps, following the removal of apps with "overtly sexual content" from the App Store.

The developer of Wobble iBoobs broke the story late last week, publishing an email from Apple on its blog. It said:

"The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately. We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application."

The same developer then followed up with a report of a phone call with Apple, giving more details on what isn't now acceptable in iPhone apps, from bikinis to sexual connotations and innuendo.

It's not just obviously 'adult' apps that are affected. Games developer IUGO has confirmed that its Daisy Mae's Alien Buffet has also been removed from the App Store by Apple, after falling foul of the new rules.

The move is controversial for several reasons. First: developers had no notice of the decision, and are losing revenues while they rework their apps to comply (if they can).

Second, it's a reversal of a previous decision to allow more adult apps onto the store - when the App Store first launched, they were banned, but the policy was relaxed early last year.

Third, the same definition of 'overtly sexual content' doesn't appear to apply to the films, music and audiobooks sold on the main iTunes Store.

Can you still see boobs on your iPhone? Yes, we hear there are a few on that internetweb thing accessed through the Safari browser.

But that won't be much consolation for developers affected by the rule changes, which judging by IUGO, won't just include 'adult' firms.

By the way, the image is from Gym Babes. Sorry folks, that's gone too.
