Prevalence of directory-style app stores could hamper market as content mushrooms
AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui has been speaking about the future of app discovery at the company's developer event in San Mateo this week.
Venturebeat reports that Hamoui likened the current state of the mobile app and web markets to a 'Yahoo phase', due to the fact that apps are still discovered using directory style stores.
But he stressed this doesn''t necessarily mean HTML5 would come along and solve the problem of good apps getting lost in those directories with compelling web-based alternatives.
He said: “I think it’s possible in HTML5 to do what most apps do... I think what people sort of ignore there is distribution. The whole point of the app store is distribution, and a lot of its power is distribution. Until that problem is solved, I’m not sure that HTML5 wins.”
