Console franchise Call of Duty has an iPhone spin-off, but it's a 'companion app' rather than a game.
In the absence of an obvious strategy for taking its big console games to iPhone, Activision has thrown a curveball with the launch of a companion app for Call of Duty: World At War.
It lets players of the game on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 log into their accounts to track their stats, including metrics like weapon usage and career kills.
The app has social elements, too, with the ability to view global leaderboards, and keep tabs on friends' statistics.
Meanwhile, there's a marketing element thrown in, with a news section providing stories about the console version and special events around it.
The app is already one of the Top 10 free apps on iPhone's App Store. Activision isn't the first games firm to try this strategy though: Blizzard Entertainment recently launched a World of Warcraft Mobile Armory app along the same lines.
