Acer to enter smartphone market

Taiwanese computing giant to host special event at Mobile World Congress next month.

Acer is about to step foot into the smartphone market, using an event at MWC on February 16th as the official unveiling.

In attendance at what the invite received by ME today calls a "smartphones launch" will be Gianfranco Lanci, president and CEO of the company, and Aymar De Lencquesaing of its Smart HH Business Group.

The invite asks people to "come to feel the rhythm of your life".

It seems there is no let up in electronics giants from Asia looking to get into the world of handsets, with Hyundai confirming its plans earlier this month.

Smartphones in particular is a highly-competitive space, with newscomers like iPhone and Android, an agressive BlackBerry and others giving established players like Nokia and Sony Ericsson a serious run for their money.
