Acer hints at Win 7 tablet release

CEO Gianfranco Lanci confirms plans to support Microsoft OS.

Acer has been publicly bullish about its market share aims in the smartphone market, but an initial launch on Windows 6 followed by an underwhelming series of devices based on Android has not delivered as expected.

However, the firm is still very committed to mobile, with the CEO telling Mobilized about plans for more devices based on Windows 7, Android and Meego.

Lanci said: "We have a very simple strategy. We look at mobile as the biggest opportunity in terms of growth. We introduced a smartphone 18 months ago. We are working on tablets.

"What we want to be is a global provider of mobile solutions–smartphone, tablet, netbook, notebook–any kind of mobile, going from content creation to content consumption."

After admitting disappointment with the Windows 6 OS, he was optimistic and supportive of the new version.

He said: "If we look at Windows Phone 7, today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android in terms of customization.

Elsewhere, Lanci confirmed the decision to wait for Android's Honeycomb OS when it is available for tablets, and that Acer is working on Meego for second half of 2011 release.
