Absolut launches location-based iPhone app

Absolut is the latest brand to hit iPhone's App Store, with a boozy application called Drinkspiration.

It's an encylopedia of hundreds of drinks recipes - most of which we suspect involve vodka. But the free app makes innovative use of the iPhone's GPS feature and connectivity.

For example, it offers personalised drink suggestions based on personal taste, location and occasion, while also taking into account the time of day and even the current sound volume.

Users can also share details of the drinks they're having on Facebook or Twitter, resulting in status messages giving their tipple choice and current location.

The app also hooks up to Absolut's existing Absolut Drinks community, updating users' profiles with their favourite drinks. Finally, there's a World Section that lets users see what drinks are being ordered by other users around the world in real-time.

"We wanted to create the first interactive spirits application of its kind, combining top-of-the-line mobile technology with social media interaction and user generated content," says Fredrick Tallroth, senior manager of interactive marketing at Absolut.

The app does highlight one quirk of the App Store, though. Apple's oldest age-rating is 17+, which is what Drinkspiration has been categorised as, meaning anyone 17 or older can download it.

However, due to US drinking-age laws, the app makes users confirm that they are 21 or older before using it for the first time.

Drinkspiration can be downloaded from the App Store by clicking here.
