ABC tweaks magazine circulation rules for iPad

Well, for all digital subscriptions.

The US-based Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) has changed its rules on the way magazines count their circulations, to include digital subscriptions.

That's good news for publishers looking to offer their mags as apps for iPad and other tablet devices, as well as smartphones.

According to Associated Press, the new rules specify that digital editions must contain the same editorial and advertising material, but they don't have to be laid out in exactly the same way as the print editions.

The article suggests that ABC has already approved an iPad app for Conde Nast's Wired magazine.

The publishing industry is keen to use iPad and smartphones more generally to reinvent print publications for digital consumers.

However, it could be questioned whether ABC's new rules are still restrictive, in terms of publishers experimenting with new interactive ad formats, rather than just repurposing existing print ads.
