A quarter of App Store games generate under $200

Leaving just four percent to generate over $1m on the iOS platform.

Gaming startup Streaming Colour Studios conducted a survey with approximately 250 iOS developers to determine the revenues they earn from their featured games on Apple's App Store.

The results show 25 per cent of developers earn more than $30,000 lifetime total revenue selling iOS games, while another 25 per cent have made less than $200. A stark contrast to the four per cent that have earned over $1 million.

Median revenues for the games were found to be $1,100 over the last 12 months. A quarter of games earned more than $10,675 and another quarter brought in less than $140.

In July, app analytics firm Flurry revealed freemium games, which offer in-app transactions, generate 65 per cent of gaming revenues in the App Store.  Although, just 0.5 per cent to six per cent of consumers spend money in a free game as 90 per cent will not spend anything in-game.

Owen Goss, founder of Streaming Colour Studios, blogged: "Hopefully these results have provided some insight into the games market on the App Store. I hope that it can be used to help set expectations for new and experienced developers alike.
