97 per cent of US tablet traffic comes from iPad

Sobering news for Samsung, BlackBerry, HP et al.

New research from comScore – 'Digital Omnivores: How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing U.S. Digital Media Consumption Habits' – merely consolidates what we all knew: in the US, the tablet market is the iPad market.

It also found iPads have also begun to account for a higher share of internet traffic than iPhones (46.8 per cent vs. 42.6 per cent of all iOS device traffic).

This explosion is helping to make mobile creep up as a proportion of overall data traffic.

In fact, 6.8 per cent of US data traffic comes from smartphones and tablets.

Other key findings include:

* In August 2011, more than one third (37.2 per cent) of US mobile digital traffic was via wi-fi. That's up three per cent in three months.

* Nearly ten per cent of traffic from tablets occurred via a mobile network connection.

* Half of the total US mobile population uses mobile media. The mobile media user population (those who browse the mobile web, access applications, or download content) grew 19 per cent in the past year to more than 116 million people at the end of August 2011.

* In August, 54.7 percent of all tablet owners were male and nearly 30 per cent were age 25-34. Nearly half (45.9 per cent) of tablet owners belonged to households earning $100K and more.

* Nearly half of tablet owners made or completed a purchase on their tablet.

* In the past month, more than half of tablet owners looked up product or price information for a specific store (56 per cent) and read customer ratings and reviews while on a tablet (54 per cent).

* Nearly 3 out of 5 tablet owners consume news on their tablets.

* The iOS platform had the highest share of connected devices and smartphones in use at 43.1 per cent, while Android accounted for 34.1 per cent.
