91 per cent of consumers have never heard of NFC

YouGov study reveals extent of cluelessness about contactless.

The industry fascination for NFC doesn't appear to have pervaded the British public.

YouGov found 91 per cent haven't heard of NFC and 70 per cent don't know what a mobile wallet is.

Overall, confusion reigns around the whole subject, with 69 per cent of those that have wave and pay tech in their credit cards never using it, and two per cent believing they already have NFC technology in their phone.

And even when the tech arrives in force, only five per cent are certain to adopt it.Meanwhile 48 per cent will only consider it when concerns about security, malware and reliability have been addressed.

Russell Feldman, a YouGov consultant, said: “Many consumers are attracted by the idea of paying for items via their mobile phone.

"But it is down to mobile operators and handset manufacturers to work with retailers to educate consumers about the real advantages of paying for items in this way.

"We believe once people have seen it in practice - and are reassured about the measures in place to protect their financial and personal security - they will be quick to adopt it and the industry will reap the rewards.”
