80k downloads to get top ten hit on US free app store

And 9,000 will do it on the Chinese chart.

New stats from Distimo have revealed how many downloads it takes to get into the various Apple App Store 'free to download' charts.

It found that the ten largest countries in terms of download volume among the top 300 most popular free apps are; Australia, Canada, China, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, UK and US.

The US is the biggest market, requiring 80,000 for a top ten hit, 45, top get in the top 25, and 25,000 to hit the top 50.

Markets like Italy and Australia are far easier to penetrate, requiring 2,000 downloads for a top 50 slot.

Japan – Top 10: 20,000; Top 25: 9,000; Top 50: 6,000

United Kingdom – Top 10: 18,000; Top 25: 8,000; Top 50: 5,000
Germany – Top 10: 12,000; Top 25: 5,000; Top 50: 3,000
France – Top 10: 10,000; Top 25: 5,000; Top 50: 3,000

Interesting comparison with Android here. A few days back, Google published an infographic which showed the US at number four in the 'most downloads per capita' stakes behind Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
