7digital's BlackBerry music store app goes live

More countries but less devices than Thumbplay rival.

Music firm 7digital has launched its Music Store application for BlackBerry, selling DRM-free MP3 tracks over 3G and Wi-Fi.

The app was announced earlier this year, and includes a built-in media player for users to play their downloaded songs. Charts are included to help people find the most popular songs.

7digital's app, which was made by DevelopIQ, will go head-to-head with the Thumbplay Music Store, which launched for BlackBerry in August. It too offers DRM-free MP3s for download over the air.

However, there are differences between the two. Thumbplay's store is only available to US BlackBerry users at the moment, while 7digital's has launched in the US, UK, Germany, Italy and Spain.

That said, Thumbplay has the edge when it comes to devices, working on 15 different models. For now, 7digital's store is only available on three handsets.

The competition is good news for Research In Motion, though, which has been trumpeting its music credentials in recent months through partnerships with U2 and Will.I.Am.

7digital is clearly aware of RIM's activities - every screenshot of its store on the BlackBerry App World website features U2!
