More than a quarter of Brits choose mobile for online shopping.

Online shopping is now commonplace for millions, as consumers choose to search for the best available bargains and it continues to flourish with the introduction of discount sites and apps like Groupon.

e-commerce personalisation provider RichRelevance says mobile powered a large portion of shopping on the web with more than one in four consumers using their device. The study explored more than 139 million online shopping sessions and 3.7 million orders during December 2011.

Shopping sessions grew from 23 per cent on December 1st to reach 31 per cent by December 31st, while m-payments accounted for eight per cent of total sales, according to the report.

Results show 43 per cent on consumers used a mobile device to shop on Christmas Day, which declined slightly to 40 per cent on Boxing Day.

iPad and iPhone were the main choice for mobile shoppers as 97 per cent of purchases came from an iOS device in December and 79 per cent came from iPad. Additionally mobile shoppers spent an average of £111.86 compared to £102.20 on desktops.

Darren Hitchcock, VP, UK and European region, RichRelevance, says: "m-commerce is rapidly becoming a top priority for the retail industry as customers look to connect with retailers anytime, anywhere.

"This is evidenced by the fact that mobile devices accounted for more than a quarter of online shopping and nearly one in 10 pounds this Christmas. We are working in depth with the majority of our customers in support of their mobile initiatives to ensure consumers have a consistent and personalised experience regardless of which channel they choose to shop."
