75 per cent of Americans use mobile phone in the loo

In October, we reported that more than a quarter of UK tablet owners had a penchant for using their device whilst going to the toilet.

Now, US-based marketing agency 11mark claims three-quarters of Americans don't enter the bathroom without their mobile phone as 74 per cent of men have used their handset in the loo, while women lead with 76 per cent.

However, results show that men regard the toilet as a substitute office as one-fifth have participated in work-related calls, compared to 13 per cent of females.

The report says that 63 per cent have taken a phone call, compared to 41 per cent that have initiated a phone call, while 67 per cent have read a text and 38 per cent have surfed the web.

Nicole Burdette, principal, 11mark, said: "The writing is on the stall. This study confirms what we all know -- that the last private place is no longer private. And, that the 'mobile-everywhere' phenomenon is flushing out a host of new opportunities for savvy communicators."

When analysed by OS, 87 per cent of Android users have used their mobile in the bathroom, compared to 84 per cent of BlackBerry users and 77 per cent of iPhone users.

Additionally, Android and iPhone users are more likely to browse a social network or use an app in the lavatory, compared to BlackBerry owners that are more likely to take calls.

Further results show that Generation Y has 91 per cent of in-toilet phone users, while Generation X has 80 per cent.

Interesting topic and article. Glad to see data backing up these claims. This article just goes to show how personal the mobile phone is to users. Many turn to their mobile devices as entertainment to pass the time while waiting anywhere for anything. Users are so attached that they even continue working from home due to these amazing devices. Just goes to show how effective advertising via mobile is as your demographic can be reached at any time - even in the restroom.
