And redemption rates will hit eight per cent.

A new report from Juniper Research says growth in North American and Western European markets will drive a big surge in the embryonic mobile coupon space.

It says the eight per cent redemption rate represents eight times the rate achieved by the best paper coupons campaigns.

This is because of the inherent advantages of mobile over paper and online – bridging the divide between online and physical retailing and targeting users with individual offers.

The boom expected from mobile could push the total coupon market to exceed $43bn globally by 2016.

However, Juniper does add that the initial period of experimentation could prompt a slight decrease at first.

There's a huge amount of interest in this sector, most of which is centred around the many imminent NFC contactless wallet schemes. These include Google Wallet, the US operator project Isis and the soon-to-launch UK operator scheme.

Report author David Snow said: "As with all new mass markets there is an initial 'shakeout' period. North America and Western Europe are at this stage now.

For the next few years users will be signing up to multiple coupon schemes and deciding on the ones they like best - so now is a crucial time for mobile marketing agencies to get it right on behalf of their clients and establish a loyal customer base."
