BlackBerry and Android the next most popular platforms.

More than half of US mobile developers are building apps for Apple's iPhone OS, according to a survey conducted by iGR.

BlackBerry was the next most popular platform, followed by Android and Windows Mobile 6.5. iGR hasn't released percentages for these, but it says BlackBerry and Android have overtaken WinMo since its last survey a year ago.

iGR says that developers surveyed are currently developing for 2.4 platforms on average, although they say that will increase to 3.4 over the next 12 months: Good news for Research In Motion and Google as they continue to grow their app stores.

The survey also revealed that more than half of developers think multi-touch is important or essential to app development.

"With each new feature and capability added to smartphone OSes, competition in the space continues to heat up," says Matthew Vartabedian, iGR's research VP.
