Twitter proclaims success of strategy to encourage mobile users.
The firm says its mobile user base has jumped 62 per cent since mid-April, and that 16 per cent of all new users to Twitter start on mobile now, as opposed to the five per cent before Twitter launched its first Twitter-branded mobile client.
The improvement came after Twitter did user tests and confirmed that even though there was a plethora of third-party mobile apps, people were having trouble finding and selecting one because none were called “Twitter.”
For this reason, it acquired Tweetie and turned it into Twitter for iPhone, complete with a new user sign-up experience. It later did the same with Twitter for BlackBerry (developed by RIM) and Twitter for Android, which launched a new version this week.
However, the research also shows that while smartphone clients are important, more people who use the mobile Twitter web site and/or SMS.
Meanwhile users of programmes like TweetDeck remain some of the most active and frequent users. Twitter also confirmed that the number of registered third party applications is now at almost 300,000 (it includes multiple instances of the same software.)
