ESPN says its ESPN ScoreCenter iPhone app has been downloaded more than 4.5 million times since it was released last June.

The news caps an impressive year for the sports broadcaster's mobile activities.

It cites Nielsen Mobile stats showing it was the eighth most popular mobile website in 2009, averaging 8.93 million users a month - up 35% year-on-year.

The company's international football (proper football, we mean: 'soccer') and cricket sites also saw strong growth - 379% and 113% respectively.

Meanwhile, the ESPN Mobile service delivered nearly 900 million alerts to fans in 2009, up 170% compared to 2008.

Finally, ESPN's Mobile TV service, which is available through FLO TV and MobiTV in the US, screened nearly 850 live events in 2009, with viewing minutes up 186% year-on-year.

The company says it will launch more mobile apps this year, with the World Cup in South Africa expected to figure prominently in its mobile plans.
