3UK offers iPhone to 'want-away' customers

The only UK network not to offer Apple device keeps a small number under the counter.

ME understands that 3UK is offering the iPhone 3G (but not the 3G S) to customers intent on leaving to join a network that ranges the Apple device.

It's a similar arrangement to that set up by T-Mobile in the summer, in which modest quantities of the iPhone 3G were sourced from a European distributor and made compatible with the network.

As we understand it, this should not be read as an indication that 3UK is about to join O2, Vodafone and Orange/T-Mobile in formally offering the device.

It's more about customer retention. Indeed, we're led to believe that 3UK is unconvinced by the Apple business model and would prefer to ship devices that it can configure around its own services. Devices like the INQ family, for example.
