In its 2010 Touch Panel Market Analysis, DisplaySearch reports that total touchscreen shipments increased 29 per cent in 2009, to 606 million units.
These devices include MP3 players, tablets, portable media devices and so on, but it's phones that lead the way.
The touchscreen space comprises over a dozen different technologies. Resistive is still the leading technology in terms of unit shipments, with 90 companies manufacturing it in 2010.
However, projected capacitive shipments have also increased substantially largely due to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, and with the iPad adopting it in 2010, DisplaySearch forecasts that revenues from projected capacitive will pass resistive touch technology in 2010.
