That's 158.6 per cent more than at the end of 2010.
A new study from eMarketer.com reflects the rapacious rise of the tablet habit and says that there will be a 63.8 per cent rise in ownership to 54.8 million by 2012.
Thereafter the US installed base will hit 89.5 million by 2014, and usage will be so pervasive that 35.6 per cent of Internet users will use an iPad at least once per month by this time.
Device wise it's all iPad for the moment, but eMarketer does record that 22 per cent of people want a Kindle Fire versus 65 per cent who want an iPad, so there's evidence of a little shift.
As of today, 31.5 per cent of tablet users are 18 to 34 and 55.5 per cent are 35 and older. The split will be broadly the same in 2014, with 18 to 34-year-olds accounting for 34.8 per cent against 49.3 per cent for the over 35s.
