Qualcomm made a significant step towards making BREW a force in Europe with the news that 3 is to launch handsets based on the platform.
Hutchison Whampoa 3 operating companies will now incorporate BREW’s 'feature-rich applications', which ease discovery and delivery. There’s no definite confirmation in the announcement about whether this applies across all 3 companies or which services are being implemented. But here’s a quote anyway.Frank Meehan, director and general manager, of Hutchison Whampoa’s global 3G handset and application group, said: “3 has always been dedicated to offering customers the best possible mobile Internet experience, and we believe this launch will allow us to extend this philosophy even further. Using BREW, we can embed applications on the handset to deliver a single integrated user experience, which in turn will encourage take-up of our services.”
To date, 3 has launched commercial 3G services in Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel and Ireland.
