3 UK has begun showcasing third-party apps as part of its neXt initiative.
The data-heavy applications will be offered to 3 customers on the X-Series mobile internet tariff, which was launched in November.Among the initial line-up social networking applications from Jaiku, mapping services from Mapsolute, a mobile-optimised version of Wikipedia from SevenVal and a photo-upload and handset backup service from Shozu.
The apps have been chosen based on 3's own compatibility and performance tests.
neXt is supported by a free web and .mobi site aimed at X-Series and other mobile internet users from any country or network to enable them to find and use mobile apps and mobile optimised websites.
John Penberthy-Smith, marketing director at 3, said: "The first stage of X-Series that we launched last year brought some of the biggest names on the web to mobile handsets. neXt is about helping customers to explore a wider range of new and innovative applications."
