Free VoIP calls and IM from new 'affordable' handset in all 3 territories.
It's not content per se, but it says a lot about where the mobile industry could be heading: 3 is to offer a low-cost 3G multimedia handset with dedicated Skype buttons built in.Interestingly, the handset was developed by Skype and 3 in partnership with Qualcomm, using the BREW platform to access features such as address book and messaging.
The device supports 3's existing Skype service, which is available as part of its X-Series multimedia line-up.
The 3 Skypephone will be available in the UK from November 2nd, and then Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden before the end of the year.
In the UK, the 3 Skypephone is £49.99 on a PAYG tariff or free on a contract.
