25 per cent of UK mobile internet users do mobile banking

In spite of the fact that only four out of 14 high street banks offer a dedicated mobile banking app.

A study by YouGov and app specialist Antenna revealed a basic desire for banking on the handset, but revealed that these users are being pushed towards the mobile web thanks to the paucity of apps available.

It found 15 per cent use the internet as opposed to five per cent for apps.

This contrasts with the US, where banking apps and mobile websites are used almost equally (13 per cent and 16 per cent respectively), with eight per cent using them the same amount and the majority of banks offering dedicated mobile banking apps.

Unsurprisingly the users skew young, with 30 per cent of 18-24 year old and 33 per cent of 25-34 year olds utilising mobile banking compared to 13 per cent of over 55s.

The most desired functions are checking their account balance (46 per cent), viewing their transaction history (31 per cent), transferring money between their own accounts (27 per cent), paying their bills (25 per cent) and transferring money to third parties (20 per cent).

Antenna’s research found the main barrier to more adoption is security, with 69 per cent of UK mobile internet users having concerns. It's why less than one per cent trust a banking app not provided by their own bank.

“Mobile banking has now taken hold,” commented Jim Hemmer, CEO of Antenna. “The public clearly want to fit their banking chores around their lives and not their lives around their banking chores, and using their mobiles, they can.

"Banks need to acknowledge this by implementing holistic mobile banking strategies as soon as possible, and that means providing easy-to-use mobile web and apps across all device platforms.”
