20m Europeans used mobile banking in March

That's 8.5 per cent of the population – and it's mostly thanks to smartphones and apps.

ComScore looked at users in UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy and registered a 15.4 per cent rise in mobile bankers since August 2010.

70 per cent of these users are accessing banking services from a smartphone.

The French were keenest. During the three month period ending March 2011, 10.3 per cent of them accessedbank accounts through their mobile phones.

Spain ranked a close second with 10.2 per cent penetration.

In the UK only 3.9 per cent of the mobile population used such services in March 2011 even though availability of services was third highest in Europe (8.6 per cent of the total UK mobile market).

Other stats showed that men were twice as likely as women to use mobile banking, and that 25-34 year olds accounted for the highest percentage of users (27.9 per cent).
