2,500 firms register for UK premium rate service registration scheme

PhonepayPlus proclaims vibrancy of the UK market as its new code of practice goes live.

The registration scheme is mandatory for all PRS providers, and PPP has pronounced itself delighted with the response, with nearly 2,500 registrations, 250 of which came from companies registered overseas.

Over 70 public limited companies have registered, including publishers, broadcasters and games developers. Over 120 charities have added their names to the list.

PhonepayPlus’ CEO Paul Whiteing, said: “What we are seeing in the diversity and dynamism of companies and organisations registering with us confirms what our own market research has suggested in recent years.

“The UK PRS market is an innovative sector of the UK economy and has significant potential for growth. The number of overseas companies on our database indicates that international businesses see real benefit in the UK PRS market.

PPP is right to be pleased with the outcome, but history shows how fraught this space can be since every loophole can be exploited by unethical companies.

And technology changes make it doubly hard for regulators to stay one step ahead of miscreants. Micro-payment is one obvious area that requires extreme vigilance right now, for example.
