One in four will cost $150 or less.
Juniper Research says smartphone adoption will more than triple between last year, when 302m were shipped, and 2016.
Basically, the smartphone will become the majority choice by this time, aided by low budget Android models.
That said, the premium market will remain robust, with NFC, 3D and Biometrics fuelling the appetite for top-end devices.
Report author Daniel Ashdown said: “in developed markets, many consumers will want to upgrade from a feature phone to a smartphone, but still pay a feature phone price.
"In emerging markets though, lower average consumer spending power and lack of operator subsidies will make a low price point essential”.
