It says 3G is expected to have 90 per cent market penetration by 2013 in the developed markets of Europe, and that smartphones will make up 30 per cent of all mobile devices in 2014.
The domination of the space by OEMs need to be address by operators, says Booz.
“It is not yet clear that mobile operators have the ability to capture sustainable value in this new paradigm,” said Michael Knott, Booz & Company partner.
The study shows that in order to defend market share, the established providers need to innovate in the areas of end-devices, new services and relevant content.
