Fifth straight quarterly loss for beleaguered handset maker.
Sony Ericsson sales declined 42 per cent to 1.62 billion euros in the period, reflecting the company's sluggish response to a market that has quickly re-oriented around larger touchscreen devices.
However, the firm did point to a slowing down in the decline. Units shipped in the quarter were 14.1 million, an increase of two per cent quarter-on-quarter and a decrease of 45 per cent year-on-year. Sales for the quarter were Euro 1,619 million, a sequential decrease of four per cent and a year-on-year decrease of 42 per cent.
The next two quarters will be critical for Sony Ericsson, which has finally turned the focus of its device family away from Walkman and Cyber-shot towards new smartphones such as the Xperia, Aino and Satio.
"We have cleared channel inventories, and have continued to realign internal resources and improve efficiency. We have also arranged external
financing to strengthen the company’s financial position,” said Dick Komiyama, outgoing president of Sony Ericsson.
There were no figures in the fiscals about the performance of SE's services activities.
