Google confirms growing momentum for its smartphone OS.

Google is currently activating 160,000 Android handsets every day, according to a blog post from its VP of engineering Andy Rubin.

There are now 60 Android devices available from 21 manufacturers, which are available through 59 mobile operators in 49 countries, according to the post.

The activation rate has jumped considerably from the 60,000 daily activations that Google was doing in February. Even last month, it was only at 100,000 a day.

The news came as Motorola and US operator Verizon Wireless unveiled the new Droid X handset.

The device has a 4.3-inch screen, an eight-megapixel camera with HD video recording abilities, and a 1GHz processor. Later this summer, it'll get the new Android 2.2 software and Flash 10.1.

Google has also open-sourced Android 2.2 to its manufacturer partners, which should see the software rolling out to existing Android phones, and appearing in new handsets announced in the coming weeks and months.
