'Holiday season' drives mobile shopping frenzy in the run-up to Christmas.

Analytics firm IBM claims this month's US holiday season will see 15 per cent of online shoppers do so through mobile device, doubling the amount of m-commerce users in November 2010.

The firm claims this is down to the growing adoption of iPads and Android devices among consumers, making it easier for purchases on the move.

IBM's data has been taken from over 500 US retailers to determine the results measuring results in real-time including methods such as social media and other online channels that allow consumers to communicate with brands.

Online sales are expected to grow up to 15 per cent compared to November 2010 as record numbers of consumers will move from shopping PC to mobile device, according to the report.

Further results say October saw almost 11 per cent of people use a mobile device to visit a retailer's site, rising from 4.2 per cent in October 2010.

The report says iPhone received four per cent of m-commerce shoppers last month just inching past Android with 3.5 per cent. Social media is also a key influence too as Facebook provided 77 per cent of all social network shopping traffic in October.

John Squire, director, product management, enterprise marketing management group, IBM, said: "This November holiday season will mark the true advent of the post-PC era with consumers demonstrating a heightened interest in adding mobile devices to their holiday shopping arsenal.

"In response, savvy retailers must invest in delivering hyper-personalized, smarter commerce shopping experiences that are capable of building loyalty through multiple channels with exceptionally relevant promotions, free shipping and more."
