And 19 per cent were smartphones.
Gartner says device sales were up 31.8 per cent on 2009, with smartphone sales up 72.1 per cent.
Another great year then, with emerging markets unsurprisingly driving the growth.
The bumper fourth quarter was particularly bouyant, with sales up 32.7 percent year on year to 452 million units.
Unsurprisingly Nokia ended the year as top dog, with 461.3 million units, a 7.5 per cent drop in market share from 2009. That's 28.9 percent of the total market.
Samsung was second with 17.6 per cent and 281 million units. Next came LG with 7.1 per cent market share.

RIM sold 47.5 million units, and Apple sold 46.6 million.
Western Europe and North America accounted for 52.3 per cent of global smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2010, with smartphones accounting for close to half of all handsets sold in these regions.
